Kingfisher resting .........

Boy oh boy, didn't I just get the best present ever! I have been after a set of these for far too long now, and had all but forgotten my urge to spend more money on yet more watercolour pencils! For some people it's shoes- me? Art stuff! In my defense, this was a real bargain, promise! £40+ off the cheapest I could find anywhere else AND free p and p. Good 'ol Ebay. Got enough left over now to buy...a pair of shoes!
I have been toying for a wee while to a range of birds in the same manner as my butterflies which have proved so popular (well, if it isn't broke etc!) I enjoy this type of work too, with monochrome backgrounds off-setting splashes of colour. Tres effective methinks. So here is the first..... and yes! I have unashamedly gone for a crowd pleaser, but then, what's not to like about a kingfisher?! A simply stunning bird.

Serena, That is the most beautiful kingfisher painting I have ever seen. You have captured it to perfection. I can't wait for Rose to see it. Perhaps a wren next?! All our love Mems and Peps

Dear Mems and Peps
Well! With lovely comments like that, your wish is my command!!!! It'll be nice to use the 'browns' section of my new colours...oh! Did I mention I have some new colours?! Ha! The wren is the only bird I actually know the Latin for- "schoolboy humour me up me ol bucko!" I'm currently working on book covers, but it's now on my list of to-dos (plus robins, nuthatches etc.!)
Big hugs, take care, and love to Rose too from us xxxx

Thank you Babs! I'm glad I'm not the only one preferring artystuff- my hubby has a thing for tools, espesh the power variety! (Last year I caught him actually drilling the holes for conkers!) Much more fun than shoes! :)

Now you've got me, Serena,,,what are 'conkers'?

Sorry Babs!
It is the "seed" of the horse chestnut tree- they grow quite big and over here we thread them onto string to play a vicious game!! You pair up and take turns to whack your opponents conker off their string basically... regardless of cracked knuckles and black eyes! Ah! These quaint customs!! If you google images though, you will see just how beautiful they are when they first come out of the 'shell'- the nicest richest mahogany. I think elsewhere in the world the game is called Kingers (?) but I'm not sure. Over here the powers that be are trying to ban the game from the playground because of health and safety issues... but it's a great kids game that most adults play if given the chance!!!
